What does Entheogen Mean?

Coined in 1979 by a group of ethnobotanists and scholars of mythology, the word "Entheogen," is derived from two ancient Greek words that translate into English, first as the adjective entheos, meaning "full of the god, spirit, inspired, possessed," and is the root word for Enthusiasm. Thus, it is only natural that we are moving into this Third Wave with such articulate enthusiasm that escalates the dialogue beyond the previous recreational drug hysteria movement of the late '60s. This new movement is already producing fruitful results that are benefiting our society - evident through clinical research, historical findings, and open dialogue that continues to unveil what has been hidden from us for years.

The second word Genesthai means "to come into being." Thus, an entheogen is a substance that causes one to become inspired or to experience feelings of inspiration, often in a spiritual manner. To me personally, the meaning is beautiful - "Full of Spirit, Come into Being" ... and this is how the medicine speaks to us.
